A Sheffield maker with a long history

Edwin Blyde is a family-owned business based in Sheffield, where its craftspeople, engravers and customer service team combine traditional skills with modern working methods.

The company develops and manufactures its pewter in Darnall. Its spur trademark has a family connection: it recalls a member of the Blyde family who joined the business after serving in a British Army cavalry division.

Trained staff inspect every finished piece and return anything unsatisfactory for correction before it is packed. That is the difference you are paying for in a traditionally made pewter gift.

The work behind the finish

Edwin Blyde describes its pewter as individually handmade. Depending on the design, a piece may be rolled or pressed, formed on a spinning lathe, cast and soldered together, then finished and polished by hand. Not every item goes through every stage.

Rolling and pressing

Sheet pewter is rolled, and patterns are pressed into the metal before shaping begins.

Spinning

Spinning

Shapes are formed over a mandrel on a spinning lathe.

Casting and joining

Handles and other components are cast, then soldered to the body by hand.

Finishing

Surface marks are removed and polishing brings out the natural colour of the metal.

What is pewter?

Pewter is an alloy made mainly from tin. Edwin Blyde adds a small amount of copper for hardness, and states that its pewter is lead-free and conforms to British pewter standards.

Many of the heavier pieces carry touchmarks: the spur, which is Edwin Blyde's registered mark, a Union Jack for British manufacture, and a seahorse for membership of the Association of British Pewter Craftsmen. These are not stamped on every item, so ask us if the marks matter to you.

Looking after your pewter

Wash gently in warm soapy water or a mild detergent solution, then dry with a soft cloth. Never put pewter in a dishwasher: the heat and detergent will damage the finish.

If polishing is needed, Edwin Blyde recommends a non-abrasive metal polish. Matte, coloured and mixed-material finishes need different care, so ask us about the piece you have chosen.

Find the right piece

Browse the range and add your engraving as you order. If you are buying for a presentation, a club or a set of awards, tell us the quantity and the date you need them and we will take care of it.
